Pete Codling spends a lot of time visiting schools for workshops or presentations on landmarks and sculpture. Most of the commissions he undertakes have involved some form of engagement with schools and community groups. Pete believes that now consideration of public art and the built environment form part of the national curriculum it is essential that pupils are given the chance to meet and see the work of contemporary practitioners.
Through workshops and presentations, students gain knowledge of the design and creative processes involved in making sculpture for public places. This is vital for the understanding of their build environment and helps with their sense of place in a community.
A visit to the school or college may be a simple presentation of Pete's work as a slide show and a talk about being an artist as a professional occupation. Other times the discussion may be include discussion on ‘landmarks and sculpture’ - public art and landmarks in the area in which students and relatives live, as well as the significance of international land marks, sculpture and architecture such as the Eiffel tower, the Statue of Liberty or the Angel of the North.
Workshops and visits are normally tailored to each school, either enhancing existing curriculum activity, a commission for their school grounds, or as part of the consultation process of a public art project in their neighbourhood.
