About Pete Codling

Pete was born in Zambia 1969 to Anglo-Irish parents and was raised in Cornwall and Scotland before finally settling in Portsmouth UK where he lives, working on public art projects and private commissions.

He studied at Portsmouth College of Art, East London Polytechnic, Wimbledon School of Art and the University of Portsmouth. He has a Masters Degree in Art Design and Media and is a visiting lecturer in sculpture and fine art.

Pete creates a range of public realm artworks from the miniature to the epic; from large scale public commissions to artist interventions and installations. This body of work has attracted national awards and recognition from CABE, The Arts Council of England and the private sector.

Pete Codling works across the disciplines of landscape, furniture, architecture and sculpture. He is known for the variety of materials he uses, continually looking to expand his pallet in pursuit of the idea in hand. He works “outside the gallery” in what he calls “the front line of public art; away from the galleries and ivory towers of academia into the streets, tower blocks and estates of regeneration areas.”

As a sculptor, he aims to “contribute to the built environment, to make a physical difference that helps a community build a sense of place and gives the public a sense of ownership in the city.” Pete is a member of the Hampshire Sculpture Trust, and The International Sculpture Centre.
